Lesson 6
Sitting With Silence and Strong Emotion
Before You Begin
This lesson includes discussion of tears, anger, and strong emotions. While there are no graphic examples, you may find yourself reflecting on conversations you've experienced personally.
Some of the most meaningful moments in a conversation happen when nothing is being said.
Silence, tears, frustration, and other strong emotions can make many of us feel uncomfortable. Our natural instinct is often to fill the silence, offer reassurance, change the subject, or quickly make the discomfort go away.
But what if the most helpful thing we can offer is simply our presence?
In this lesson, you'll learn how to remain steady when emotions become intense, how to recognize when silence is serving the conversation, and how a few simple words can communicate safety without interrupting someone's process.
You'll also explore the difference between sitting with healthy emotional expression and recognizing when a conversation has become unsafe and requires clear boundaries.
